Salons, gyms and beauty creators use an AI video editor to turn phone clips into 10 to 20 second before and after reels, trainer tip reels with exercise clips, and class or booking promos with one offer. Upload the clips, describe the look and brand colours, and end on what the viewer should do: book, join or visit.

Why salon and gym reels look amateur
Most weak transformation reels fail for the same handful of reasons. None of them are about the camera.
- The reveal comes too late. Twenty seconds of foils and sectioning before the finished look. Viewers decide in the first 2 or 3 seconds; show the before briefly and get to the after.
- Before and after shot differently. Different light, angle or distance makes the change look less real, or suspicious. Same spot, same light, same framing.
- The result is on screen for half a second. The finished look needs 3 to 5 seconds, ideally with a slow turn of the head or the hands.
- Text under the app buttons. Prices and booking lines placed at the bottom get covered by captions and the like button.
- Two offers in one promo. "Weekend slots" and "new client discount" in one 15 second video means neither lands.
How to edit a before and after transformation reel
The fix is mostly in how you film, then in a tight edit. A manual edit in CapCut or Instagram's editor typically takes 20 to 45 minutes per reel once you include trimming, syncing the cut to the beat and placing text; with Otto the brief and review are usually 5 to 10 minutes.
- Film 3 seconds of the before. Same spot every time, facing a window or a ring light, phone upright and steady.
- Film the after slowly. 5 to 10 seconds: a slow turn, hands moving through the hair, the full outfit for a fitness check-in.
- Cut on the beat, hold the result. Before for about 2 seconds, one sharp cut on a beat, then let the after breathe.
- One line of text, one call to action. The service name and an end card such as "Book via the link in bio". Keep text in the middle of the frame.
For gyms, the same logic applies to client progress (with written consent) and to class promos: show the energy of the class in the first 2 seconds, then the time, the place and how to book.
Salon and gym reel prompts
Adapted from real requests Videotto users sent to Otto. The first is for the most common job, a before and after reveal.
Trainer tip reel: "Create an Instagram reel, [colour] and [colour] theme, classy. Title: 'Stuck on a plateau?' Three reasons why: [reason 1], [reason 2], [reason 3]. Show a short exercise clip for each reason. Big captions, fully viewable on an iPhone."
Class or booking promo: "Make a 20 second promo for [salon or gym] in [city]. One message: [the offer or availability]. Strong first 2 seconds, upbeat music. Brand colours. End on the booking link and logo. Make a longer version for TikTok and a shorter one for Reels."
Beauty product story: "Create a 20 second 9:16 story ad about [product] with a cute expressive personality: forgotten on the shelf, noticed by a customer, becomes their favourite. Soft cinematic lighting. End on [brand] and [offer]."
[upload your clips] Make a 15 second 9:16 before and after reel for my salon. Show the before for 2 seconds, then cut on the beat to the finished look and hold it. Trim anything where tools or rollers are visible in the final look. Classy text in [colours]: [service name]. End with "Book now" and my logo.
Useful when all you have is a photo of the finished look.
Worked example: a 15 second hair colour reveal
Example: a stylist has a 6 second clip of a client's dark brown hair before colouring and a 12 second clip of the finished copper colour, filmed at the same mirror. The salon is offering midweek appointments. Using the first prompt above, the reel could come out like this:
| Time | On screen | Text and sound |
|---|---|---|
| 0 to 2 s | Before: dark brown, flat light from the mirror | "Brunette to copper" in the middle third |
| 2 s | Hard cut on the first strong beat | Music lifts |
| 2 to 11 s | After: slow turn, hand through the lengths | No extra text, let the colour show |
| 11 to 15 s | Freeze on the best angle | "Midweek appointments open. Book via the link in bio." Logo |
Six seconds of before footage was more than needed; 2 seconds was enough. The one change worth asking for after the first version is often "hold the after one second longer". Get the client's permission before posting, in writing if you can.
Reel specs for salons, gyms and beauty pages
One edit can cover every platform if you keep the important parts in the centre of the frame.
| Video | Format | Length | Where |
|---|---|---|---|
| Before and after reveal | 9:16, 1080 x 1920 | 10 to 20 seconds | Reels, TikTok, Shorts |
| Trainer tip reel | 9:16 | 30 to 60 seconds | Reels, TikTok |
| Class or booking promo | 9:16 and 4:5 | 15 to 20 seconds | Stories, feed, ads |
| Photo of finished work, animated | 4:5 or 9:16 | 6 to 10 seconds | Feed, Google Business Profile |
Keep text and faces out of the bottom fifth and away from the right edge, where Instagram and TikTok place captions and buttons. Avoid promises about weight loss or skin results you cannot support; platforms restrict those claims in ads.
FAQ
How do you film a before and after video for a salon?
To film a before and after video for a salon, use the same spot, light and phone position for both shots. Film about 3 seconds of the before and 5 to 10 seconds of the after with a slow turn of the head. Face a window or ring light, hold the phone upright, and ask the client for permission first.
How long should a transformation reel be on Instagram?
A transformation reel on Instagram usually works best at 10 to 20 seconds. Show the before for about 2 seconds, cut on a beat, and give the after at least 3 to 5 seconds on screen. Longer reels can work for process videos, but a pure reveal rarely needs more than 20 seconds.
Do I need client consent to post their photos or videos?
You should always get client consent before posting their photos or videos, and written consent is safer than a verbal yes. A simple form at booking or a signed release covers it. For gym progress content, which can show bodies and personal goals, be especially careful and offer to crop out faces if the client prefers.
What should a gym class promo video include?
A gym class promo video should include the energy of the class in the first 2 seconds, the class name, the day and time, the location, and one clear way to book. Keep it to 15 to 20 seconds with one message. If you also run an offer, make a separate promo for it rather than adding it to the same video.
How often should a salon post reels?
A salon usually does well posting reels two to four times a week, mixing before and after reveals with promos for open slots. Consistency matters more than volume, so pick a number you can keep during busy weeks. Filming the before and after of a few clients each week is often enough material.
